Getting to Brighton

from London

From central London there are two main ways to get to Brighton. The first is via London Victoria. Accessable via underground (TfL) services on the Circle, District and Victoria lines.

From Victoria Station you will be required to take an overground (National Rail) (Thameslink/Gatwick Express/Southern Rail) train service from here to Brighton (~60m). (Typically Platforms 15-19, but please follow the platform information provided on the large LED screens).

The other route is via London Bridge, accessable via the Jubilee and Northen lines. You can take a direct overground service to Brighton, which typically takes ~1h 15m.

Gatwick Airport

While we would encourage your travel to be as sustainable as possible, we understand that traveling long distances on trains in the UK can be expensive. Therefore, for completeness, we will provide information for those who may fly into Gatwick airport. Gatwick is conveniently located close to Brighton and provides many travel options. In terms of public transport, Brighton is a 30 minute train journey from Gatwick and costs ~£20 for a return journey, with trains running every 6 minutes.

The next option is to take a bus from Gatwick to Brighton. These are less frequent (running every ~2 hours) and takes ~1hour to reach Brighton. However, this is a cheaper option costing £11 for a return journey.

The third option is to take a taxi to Brighton. A taxi will cost ~£40 for a single journey and will take ~45 minutes to reach Brighton. We reccomend booking from a taxi company in Brighton as it may be cheaper.

Getting to Campus from Brighton

by train

There are regular (~ every 10mins) trains between Brighton and Falmer (campus) station The trains to Falmer usually depart from platform 8, but sometimes platform 7. Their final destination of these trains will one of the following: Ore, Seaford, Hastings, or Lewes.

For more information on trains, train times and live schedules please visit the National Rail website or download their Android or iOS app.

by bus

If you are in a sea front hotel, then taking the bus will be more convenient than taking the train. (That said, it will only be a 10 minute walk to the train station and the trains don't get held up by traffic.)

Bus information to campus can be found here.

Most likely you will be taking one of the following numbered buses: 25,25X (all of which stop inside campus) or 28 & 29 (which stop just outside campus).

All of these buses leave from Old Steyne, bus stop F (indicated on the interactive map below).

We recommend the 25X because it makes fewer stops. If you are lucky you'll travel on the 25X that has been decorated in an astronomy theme (there is even a picture of the Blanco at the back of the bus).

There is also night bus (N25 that runs from midnight to 5am, but it is unlikely you'll need to use that.)

Buses are very frequent, but can get very crowded in rush hour. The scheduled travel time is ~20 minutes, but there are a lot of road/building works on the route at the moment, so allow 40 minutes just in case.

There are several bus stops on campus. We recommend the one on North-South road (indicated on the interactive map below). This stop is extremely close to the meeting venue being less than a 1 minute walk.

Tickets cost around £5 for unlimited use all day. The easiest way to pay is via a contactless credit/debit card. Alternatively, if you download the Brighton and Hove Buses app, you will be able to buy a 7 day ticket. There are discounts for students.

For more information on busses and bustimes please visit the Brighton and Hove Busses website, or download their Android or iOS app.

by car

If you wish to drive to the University of Sussex, please contact the LOC as soon as possible. Parking permits are required to park on campus, and while permits are available, car parks on campus operate on a "first come, first to occupy" basis.

Driving instructions can be found here.

The meeting will take place in the Pevensey 1 building, leacture room Pevensey 1A7 (area C3 on the campus map). Therefore, we recommend parking in Science 1 car park, since this is the closest to the venue. All ten car parks are marked on the campus map.

Accommodation

Campus accommodation is available, however, these are limited and will operate on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you would like to stay on campus, please indicate this during the registration process. We we then contact you with details on how to book and pay for this.

There are two main areas in the city we recommend to book hotels, near the train station, or near the seafront. The hotels near the station offer convience to get to campus and are typically only a few minutes walk to the station itself. Hotels near the sea front are generally more expensive and would be a ~20 minute walk to the station and therefore it may be best to get a bus to campus. However, you do get easy access to the glorious Brighton seafront. Below we will list example hotels with average prices per night for the week of the conference. Note, these prices will be refundable listed prices and may be cheaper if booking an advanced purchase non-refundable rate.
